About this event: Anti- HIV/AIDS Stigma Campaign

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

The event was being organized with the hope of addressing the intersections of oppression on school children affected by HIV/AIDS. Although it was recognized that HIV/AIDS related stigma and discrimination is not the fight of young people alone the event was oriented towards in-school young people only. The youth who would participate in the event would be aged between 9-17and be from three schools in southern Province of Rwanda. In bringing these children together the hope was not only to give them the opportunity to discuss empowerment but also create a supportive academic network between individuals and their organizations or clubs.

Furthermore, the past school AIDS clubs, which were done with a little number of student volunteers, concluded that the clubs’ non-success came from a lack of communication skills, accurate information and the sense of empowerment amongst the students. This event (preparation, organization and celebration) would empower those students in clubs as well as all students from participating schools. In giving the opportunity for learning communication skills, provide accurate information and empowerment to school youth it is more likely that the service project which included the event would be more successful. The project sponsored by YOUTH SERVICE AMERICA could include this training and the celebration of the global youth service day April 24-26, 2009. Four volunteers from VCP/ MEDSAR were in charge of organizing the training of the service project volunteers where 24 students from 3 schools attended the training sessions.

The event would give also participants from various public sectors /organizations the opportunity to socialize, make supportive connections and learn from one another, as well as be empowered and learn from an informational exchange between them.
